Campus Ministry programming is on hiatus for the summer. Watch for more information about our Fall programming later in the summer. In the meantime, Pastor Elizabeth is available by phone, email or appointment.
Augustana received three new members Sunday, September 15: Olivia-Beth Horak, Craig Larimer, and Amanda Sneed. Please introduce yourself and welcome them into our community.
Augustana invites youth age 2 through 9th grade to join us for Sunday School between the 8:15 and 10:45 services. The Sunday School is located on the second floor of Augustana.
In September at our Adult Forums, 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM in the GA room, we will study great sermons by some of the great Christian preachers of our time. We continue our study of great sermons by contemporary preachers by looking at another mountaintop sermon: Joseph Sittler's “The View from Mt. Nebo.” Phil Hefner will be leading the discussion on September 15.
Augustana has received a grant from the synod to participate in LSSI's Setting the Table Process. An LSSI staff member, possibly Rev. Dan Schwick, will work with a team of Augustana members over the next 12 months to collect data about our neighborhoods, analyze needs, and develop a plan of action for a significant Augustana-led community ministry. You are invited to serve on Augustana's “Setting the Table” Team. Sign up in the narthex and contact Pastor Stephanie for more information.
We are building a team of volunteers for our community breakfast on the 3rd Saturday of the month beginning October 19. We anticipate feeding 40-70 community members on any given Saturday. Sign up in the narthex to cook, serve, clean up and provide door security.
Giving last week: $4,869
Giving to date: $179,693
Budget to date: $191,145
Attendance last week: 8:15: 30, 10:45: 99
Augustana’s choirs resume regular rehearsals in September. Consider joining the Cantorei (High School through adult) which rehearse Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 PM beginning September 5 and sing every week at the 10:45 liturgy. The Schola Cantorum (singing school) is for children in 3rd through 6th grade. Rehearsals are Wednesday afternoons from 4:15 to 5 PM beginning September 11. They sing at either the 8:15 or the 10:45 liturgy about every third week.
Help Sunday worshipers build friendships by providing light refreshments during our coffee hour following our Sunday services. Please sign up in the narthex to serve in this vital ministry.
Augustana is serving grape juice as well as wine. In addition to the silver chalice of wine offered first as a common drinking cup, we will also use a second, new ceramic intinction chalice that has a divided cup. The larger portion of the divided chalice will contain white wine for those receiving wine by intinction. The smaller portion of the divided chalice will contain purple grape juice. Individuals needing to commune using grape juice are invited to take the piece of bread they receive from the pastor and dip the bread into the grape juice in the smaller portion of the divided chalice.
Our worship liturgy is literally the “work of the people.” You are invited to help lead worship by serving as a reader, assisting minister, communion assistant and crucifer at our 9:30 AM worship service this summer. This is especially a good opportunity for choir members who otherwise don't get a chance to help at the altar during the academic year/choir season. Sign-up sheets on blue paper are posted in the narthex. In addition, during the months of July and August, you are invited to contribute to our communal offering and worship by baking homemade communion bread. This is a great opportunity for people of all ages who don't usually have a chance to assist in worship. Children and families are especially encouraged to bake for a Sunday this summer. Suggested recipes for flatbreads (helpful for intinction) will be available in the narthex along with the blue sign-up sheets. Or you can email the office with dates for Sundays you would like to bake.
If you would like to learn more or are interested in exploring this wonderful opportunity to build relationships and grow in your faith, please contact Sylvia Glauster or Pastor Stephanie.
A new mid-week Bible Study during the Thursday lunch hour is a BYOB & BBL gathering: “bring your own Bible and brown bag lunch (if you are hungry!).” We are currently looking at the remarkable Gospel of John. All are welcome to attend. Drop in for one meeting or come every week.
Many of you know the Avilas, an Augustana family we have been praying for as their young son Israel battled his second round of cancer. Happily, Issy is currently NED (no evidence of disease), but they continue to cope with a number of complications and side effects. In addition to prayers, we have the opportunity to support Issy as his mom, Lori, participates in St. Baldrick’s “46 Mommas” events. These brave moms will shave their heads, raising both money and awareness for children’s cancer research. You can make a donation through the church, writing a check to Augustana with St. Baldrick’s in the memo line, or you can contribute directly at this link. If your employer will match funds, be sure and take advantage of that as well. Thanks for your support.
The Administrative Coordinator's office hours are 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. All bulletin announcements should be in to the church office by Thursday mornings before 10:00 AM. This ensures your important information gets out to everyone who reads the bulletin. Please include your name and a phone number in case the Administrative Coordinator has a question.
The church sends out weekly emails of church and community events. If you aren't receiving these, first check your spam folder and then be sure we have your best email address. You can use the welcome page here to sign up for the emails! “Like” us if you haven't already!
There are new business cards containing general church information now available at the Welcome Desk. Please feel free to use them and give them away to friends or anyone interested in the church. (sponsored by Evangelism Committee)
The table by the elevator is the place to contribute items for three projects:
Thanks to all who have donated items for Campus Ministry to donate to The Night Ministry! We've already received a large boxful of hygiene items to donate, as well as some cold-weather items. These gifts will help The Night Ministry keep Chicago's low-income residents warm and healthy this winter. We will leave the box on the table for further donations, along with a list of the items The Night Ministry needs most.
Please bring your empty print cartridges (of any kind) to church, to be recycled. Not only will you be reducing pollution and landfill clutter, but campus ministry earns money for each empty print cartridge we collect. On the table is a big green box for collecting the cartridges; please help us fill up the box!
One of the projects of the Women of Augustana is to recycle canceled stamps — US and international — for charity. Tear or cut off the stamps leaving a one-fourth to one-half inch margin around them. There is a red plaid box on the table marked “Canceled Stamps For Tubfrim” where you can deposit your stamps. The stamps are sent to Norway to an organization called Tubfrim which collects, removes stamps from the paper, packages them and sells them. The proceeds are used to help handicapped children and youth in Norway.
There may be times when you wish to request prayer for yourself or a family member, but do not necessarily want it to be publicized in the weekly bulletin. Prayer Partners is available to help fill this need. If you have a prayer concern or want more information contact Lisa Hensey (773-633-6817) or Mira Krull (773-536-5980).
Did you know that if you have any investments or insurance policies with Thrivent, they will make a charitable contribution to Lutheran Campus Ministry at Augustana on your behalf? All you have to do is go to the Thrivent website and search for Thrivent Choice (or simply call your Thrivent representative if you don't have an online Thrivent account). Select “Augustana Lutheran Church” in “Chicago, IL” as the recipient of your Choice Dollars. The contribution from Thrivent will be deposited directly into the LCM account at Augustana! You can also set this up as a recurring choice, so that each time in the future you have Choice Dollars to designate they will automatically go to LCM at Augustana. Some of you are already designating your Thrivent Choice Dollars for Augustana, and we thank you!
Your Thrivent Choice Dollars can be directed to the Augustana congregation, too. Please follow Pastor Elizabeth's instructions for setting up a Thrivent Choice Dollar account. (See above.)
One extra step is needed since by default the funds go to Campus Ministry. You will have to contact Campus Ministry and let them know the amount that needs to be transferred to Augustana's account or a special account such as the Organ Fund. You can check your Choice Dollars activity in your account on the Thrivent Choice Dollar website. Thrivent's Choice Dollar program is a gift through you to whatever organization you designate your Choice Dollars to be given to. Make use of it! Check with your representative!
You can now contribute online to Augustana through the church web site. Just visit the site and click on the button “Donate” (toward the bottom of the column of buttons). You will be asked to set up a profile, after which you can log in. Contributions can be one-time, monthly, or weekly, and are deposited directly from your checking or savings account. (We are not able to accept credit card payments at this time.)
Volunteers are needed to assist Ms. Williams in the Nursery during the 10:45 service. Please consider joining her to help out — especially if your child is a regular participant! There is a sign-up sheet posted outside the Nursery.
Please contact the church office, 773-493-6451, for corrections and additions to these notices.
