Vacation Bible School is Filling Up!
Augustana’s VBS will be held from Tuesday, June 25 through Friday, June 28 from 9 AM until noon. (It is one day shorter this year because of the Chicago Public School strike this past Fall.) This year’s theme is “Paul’s Dangerous Adventures in Athens to Share the Truth”. Registration is now available on Augustana’s website. All children ages 3-10 (going into 5th grade) are welcome. Three year olds must be toilet trained.
Lutheran Campus Ministry At The University Of Chicago
Welcome! Please join us for lunch upstairs after the 10:45 service. We'll be joined by students from Hillel for interfaith dialogue revolving around shared scriptures. Monday and Tuesday, stop by for office hours with Pastor Elizabeth, 9:30 to 11 AM. And join us on Thursday for Body & Soul: worship at 6:30, followed by dinner and Bible study.
Sunday School Teachers Needed!
If you would like to learn more or are interested in exploring this wonderful opportunity to build relationships and grow in your faith, please contact Sylvia Glauster or Pastor Stephanie.
BYOB & BBL Bible Study
Thursdays, 12-1:15 PM
A new mid-week Bible Study during the Thursday lunch hour is a BYOB & BBL gathering: “bring your own Bible and brown bag lunch (if you are hungry!).” We are currently looking at the remarkable Gospel of John. All are welcome to attend. Drop in for one meeting or come every week.
Support the Avila Family and Children’s Cancer Research
Many of you know the Avilas, an Augustana family we have been praying for as their young son Israel battled his second round of cancer. Happily, Issy is currently NED (no evidence of disease), but they continue to cope with a number of complications and side effects. In addition to prayers, we have the opportunity to support Issy as his mom, Lori, participates in St. Baldrick’s “46 Mommas” events. These brave moms will shave their heads, raising both money and awareness for children’s cancer research. You can make a donation through the church, writing a check to Augustana with St. Baldrick’s in the memo line, or you can contribute directly at this link. If your employer will match funds, be sure and take advantage of that as well. Thanks for your support.
Augustana's First Koinonia Weekend
Thank you to our host families for putting together so many wonderful meals! We had over sixteen individuals help make these evenings a huge success. Thank you to the parishioners and friends of Augustana for participating over this weekend. We had over 88 people participate and are so truly blessed to have shared in breaking of bread, fellowship and wonderful conversation.
Toy Drive Success!
Dear Parishioners of Augustana Lutheran Church,
Thank you dearly for the donation of toys for young children on the South Side of Chicago. Your generosity will help broaden young minds.
Best, Colette T. Gatling

Keep in Contact with Augustana
The church sends out weekly emails of church and community events. If you aren't receiving these, first check your spam folder and then be sure we have your best email address. You can use the welcome page here to sign up for the emails! “Like” us if you haven't already!
Augustana Business Cards
There are new business cards containing general church information now available at the Welcome Desk. Please feel free to use them and give them away to friends or anyone interested in the church. (sponsored by Evangelism Committee)
The Donation Table
The table by the elevator is the place to contribute items for three projects:
- Items for The Night Ministry
Thanks to all who have donated items for Campus Ministry to donate to The Night Ministry! We've already received a large boxful of hygiene items to donate, as well as some cold-weather items. These gifts will help The Night Ministry keep Chicago's low-income residents warm and healthy this winter. We will leave the box on the table for further donations, along with a list of the items The Night Ministry needs most.
- Recycle Print Cartridges and Help Raise Funds for Campus Ministry
Please bring your empty print cartridges (of any kind) to church, to be recycled. Not only will you be reducing pollution and landfill clutter, but campus ministry earns money for each empty print cartridge we collect. On the table is a big green box for collecting the cartridges; please help us fill up the box!
- Recycling Postage Stamps
One of the projects of the Women of Augustana is to recycle canceled stamps — US and international — for charity. Tear or cut off the stamps leaving a one-fourth to one-half inch margin around them. There is a red plaid box on the table marked “Canceled Stamps For Tubfrim” where you can deposit your stamps. The stamps are sent to Norway to an organization called Tubfrim which collects, removes stamps from the paper, packages them and sells them. The proceeds are used to help handicapped children and youth in Norway.
Coffee Hour Volunteers
Consider signing up to host coffee hour. You can host alone or with a friend. This is just one of many ways to get involved in church life here at Augustana!
Prayer Partners
There may be times when you wish to request prayer for yourself or a family member, but do not necessarily want it to be publicized in the weekly bulletin. Prayer Partners is available to help fill this need. If you have a prayer concern or want more information contact Lisa Hensey (773-633-6817) or Mira Krull (773-536-5980).
Thrivent Choice Contributions for Campus Ministry
Did you know that if you have any investments or insurance policies with Thrivent, they will make a charitable contribution to Lutheran Campus Ministry at Augustana on your behalf? All you have to do is go to the Thrivent website and search for Thrivent Choice (or simply call your Thrivent representative if you don't have an online Thrivent account). Select “Augustana Lutheran Church” in “Chicago, IL” as the recipient of your Choice Dollars. The contribution from Thrivent will be deposited directly into the LCM account at Augustana! You can also set this up as a recurring choice, so that each time in the future you have Choice Dollars to designate they will automatically go to LCM at Augustana. Some of you are already designating your Thrivent Choice Dollars for Augustana, and we thank you!
Thrivent Choice Dollars for Augustana, Too
Your Thrivent Choice Dollars can be directed to the Augustana congregation, too. Please follow Pastor Elizabeth's instructions for setting up a Thrivent Choice Dollar account. (See above.)
One extra step is needed since by default the funds go to Campus Ministry. You will have to contact Campus Ministry and let them know the amount that needs to be transferred to Augustana's account or a special account such as the Organ Fund. You can check your Choice Dollars activity in your account on the Thrivent Choice Dollar website. Thrivent's Choice Dollar program is a gift through you to whatever organization you designate your Choice Dollars to be given to. Make use of it! Check with your representative!
Online Contributions
You can now contribute online to Augustana through the church web site. Just visit the site and click on the button “Donate” (toward the bottom of the column of buttons). You will be asked to set up a profile, after which you can log in. Contributions can be one-time, monthly, or weekly, and are deposited directly from your checking or savings account. (We are not able to accept credit card payments at this time.)
Nursery Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to assist Ms. Williams in the Nursery during the 10:45 service. Please consider joining her to help out — especially if your child is a regular participant! There is a sign-up sheet posted outside the Nursery.
Administrative Coordinator's Office Hours and Bulletin Announcements
The Administrative Coordinator's office hours are 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. All bulletin announcements should be in to the church office by Thursday mornings before 10:00 AM. This ensures your important information gets out to everyone who reads the bulletin. Please include your name and a phone number in case the Administrative Coordinator has a question.
Please contact the church office, 773-493-6451, for corrections and additions to these notices.
